ISTVAN SKY: Songs of The Butterfly Man

(AUDIO INTERVIEW + MIX)

Most of us have come to know Istvan Sky through "The Song of The Butterfly," a collaborative project with Estas Tonne, Pablo Arellano, and Indre Kuliesswift. This song has garnered over 20 million views on YouTube, an exceptional achievement within this genre. By simply reading the comments on the video, one can gain insight into the emotions evoked by the music: tranquility, love, and bliss. Istvan Sky's artistic roots draw from Shamanic, Tibetan, Indian, and Hungarian folklore traditions. However, his primary inspiration stems from his spiritual practice, of which music is an integral part. Istvan's voice serves as his most potent instrument, possessing both musical and therapeutic qualities. Ranging from reflective verses to mantras and overtone chanting, Istvan Sky's performances never fail to impress with their tonal versatility and vibrant vocal range. His residence near Lake Balaton in Hungary serves as a natural sanctuary where life, music, and silence coexist harmoniously. Despite his hermit-like demeanor, Istvan Sky welcomes numerous visitors and engages with audiences at various festivals. I had the pleasure of attending one of his concerts and workshops on the healing power of sounds at the Dakini Festival 2019. The experience was enriching, complemented by an insightful interview. Although Istvan's English may require some refinement, it remains comprehensible. An interesting aspect is his consistent use of the present simple tense, even when referring to past actions and events. While the intention behind this linguistic choice is uncertain, one might interpret it as a reflection of time perceived as a continuous present.
